The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
The Prufrock team creates the world's fastest tunnel boring machines. These machines will be responsible for creating thousands of miles of tunnel and making tunnels a viable method of transportation.
Team Overview
The Belt Systems team designs and builds high-performance conveyor systems and related mechanical components critical to our operations. These systems are engineered to handle extreme loads and operate in demanding environments, ensuring reliability and scalability for projects ranging from underground tunnels to surface material transport.
Role Overview
As a Mechanical Engineer on the Belt Systems team, you will lead the design, analysis, and implementation of belt conveyor systems, material handling components, and supporting infrastructure. You will own hardware through its entire lifecycle—design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and commissioning—while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, cost-effective solutions. This role requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering, expertise in belt conveyor design, and a proactive, hands-on approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop belt conveyor systems, including drive systems, belting, idlers, pulleys, belt wash and cleaning, and hydraulic systems, ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry standards such as CEMA.
- Create and review specifications, P&IDs, flowsheets, and vendor documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements and resolve discrepancies.
- Conduct finite element analysis (FEA), hand calculations, and CAD modeling (e.g., SolidWorks) to validate designs under extreme loads and environmental conditions.
- Lead the procurement, permitting, and subcontracting processes for equipment and materials, ensuring cost-effective solutions.
- Collaborate with teams to assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure timely delivery of designs from concept to implementation.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulations, including MSHA, OSHA, NEC, and NFPA, as well as project-specific safety and performance guidelines.
- Continuously evaluate system integration within larger operational frameworks, anticipating future scalability and development needs.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field of study.
- 4+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on belt conveyors, material handling systems, or mining equipment design.
- Hands-on experience in fabrication, assembly, or testing of mechanical systems, whether in professional, academic, or recreational settings.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Familiarity with CEMA conveyor design standards and material handling system components.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 8+ years of experience in designing belt conveyors, material handling systems, or related mechanical systems in mining or infrastructure projects.
- Advanced knowledge of discipline codes, standards, and commercial availability of materials.
- Proficiency in creating manufacturing drawings and specifying equipment for fabrication.
- Experience with mechatronics, fluid power systems, or mechanism design.
- Familiarity with regulatory standards such as MSHA, OSHA, NEC, and NFPA.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate with management, vendors, contractors, and cross-disciplinary teams.
- Conveyor analysis tools (e.g., Sidewinder, Beltstat, or Belt Analyst).
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and electronic presentation tools.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work long hours and weekends as needed in a deadline-driven, team-oriented environment.
- Acute attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical challenges.
- Authorized to work in the country where the position is located.
