Job Overview
We are seeking a Composites Engineer to spearhead the development and optimization of advanced composite materials for our cutting-edge projects. In this role, you will address challenges related to composite fabrication, including layup techniques and resin infusion, while defining lamination schedules to ensure structural integrity. You'll oversee product development, from design through implementation, and evaluate composite structures for potential flaws, recommending necessary modifications. Your responsibilities will also include preparing detailed drawings, conducting experiments to validate material properties, performing tolerance studies, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations. Collaborating with quality and tooling teams, you will write conformance standards, scope capital equipment, and facilitate engineering transfers, all while aligning processes with company quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze problems related to composite materials and produce innovative solutions using various fabrication and material methods, including layup techniques, resin infusion, as well as pre or post machining.
  • Define lamination schedules for composite components, ensuring optimal material selection and resin usage; ensure structural integrity throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Evaluate designs for potential flaws specific to composite structures and recommend modifications to eliminate identified issues.
  • Stand up a material review board for composite product development.
  • Prepare assembly or product layout and detailed drawings, participating actively in the manufacturing or assembly of prototype products or systems.
  • Design and conduct experiments to validate composite material properties and performance, using data to inform design decisions and optimize product functionality.
  • Design and implement testing methods to analyze product capabilities, troubleshooting any mechanical or structural flaws in composite components.
  • Ensure that design implementation, testing, and maintenance processes are developed and executed in alignment with company quality standards.
  • Integrate with quality and tooling teams to write standards of conformance.
  • Coordinate with 3rd party vendors and suppliers including travel as needed.
  • Integrate with the production team to identify suppliers, scope capital equipment, facilitate engineering transfer of tooling.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in engineering or a related field; a Masters degree is preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience in mechanical, structural, automotive, aerospace or chemical engineering, specifically in composite materials and systems; or material sciences.
  • Relevant certifications in composites, such as ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing) or ACP (Advanced Composite Professional) certification, are a plus.
  • Proven experience with the entire product development lifecycle, from concept through to implementation and testing.
  • Strong working knowledge of analytic tools, such as SOLIDWORKS, Fibersim, ANSYS with a focus on composite applications.
  • A working proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) systems, including CAM and CAE tools, for creating detailed drawings and simulations.
  • Experience in aerospace or maritime engineering is highly desirable, with a focus on composite structures.
  • Familiarity with core engineering concepts, including mechanics, materials science, fluid dynamics, and their applications in composite design is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
