Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized & passionate individual to join our Testing Team as the Lead Test Engineer for Electromechanical airborne hardware such as the Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU), Environmental Control Systems (ECS), and the pilot inceptor. As the Lead Test Engineer you will support the above mentioned Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) in development testing through certification testing by understanding the testing needs, developing custom test capabilities, mentoring and motivating Test Engineers, and root cause analysis of failures. The most important traits at Joby are attitude towards the project (reinvent possible) & respect towards teammates and their efforts, hard work ethic (integrity), safety (aircraft and safety in Test Engineering).


This position will be at our San Carlos, CA facility and you will actively lead Test Engineers supporting the Electromechanical hardware. This role will operate in a fast paced, demanding, and rewarding environment with very high expectations for individual contribution.

Responsibilities

Coordinate closely with Design, Systems Engineering, Certification, and Flight Test teams and implement a robust Test Program for the respective IPTs in the Type Certification aircraft. This includes:

  • Understanding test requests from various teams, and identifying the right test needed to satisfy test requirements and intent.
  • Providing technical guidance to the reporting Test Engineers on test plan, test procedure, instrumentation, test automation, data analysis, and test report generation.
  • When necessary, identify the need and build custom Test Support Equipment by interfacing with Equipment Design team to support development and certification efforts.
  • Review the Area Specific Certification plans, Means of Compliance and contribute towards development of Equipment Qualification Test Plan and Hardware Verification Test Plan.
  • Manage qualification test procedure development and support test engineer as needed in completing qualification testing of system, sub-system and /or components.
  • Work closely with Testing Team’s Program Manager and ensure team is meeting the primary goals of the Testing Team: (a) Quality testing-based design feedback in (b) a timely manner. This includes developing and tracking KPIs to assess team’s progress.
  • Communicate clear goals for the team and ensure team is mission driven to deliver on them. Create development plans for all direct reports.
  • Anticipate, develop and implement processes where needed. This could be developing safety process for a custom built stand, or creating a process for analyzing data gathered on a test stand.
    Work with operations team to understand test capacity, manage priorities and communicate schedule to key stakeholders across IPT.

Required

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience managing Test Engineers and Test Program throughout the product life cycle.
  • Real world experience with system-V process.

Desired

  • Experience in operating high voltage equipment.
  • Master’s degree or higher in related fields.
  • Prior experience with electrified products related electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with SAE standards for powertrain or powerplant testing (component, equipment, and system-level).

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $148,600 - $233,900 per year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
