Senior Construction Materials Technician

ICON is looking for a Senior Construction Materials Technician to join its Strategic R&D team. The technician’s primary responsibility will be to support the team's efforts in the development of cement-based products for manufacturing and use with ICON’s Vulcan 3D printers in cold weather conditions. This role is based on ICON’s Austin, TX campus and will report to the Director of Defense R&D.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently conduct standardized laboratory testing on aggregate, cement, concrete, and other construction materials
- Cooperate with other team members on the development and implementation of standardized and/or one-off test procedures for additive manufacturing with cement-based materials
- Participate in the internal QC program, including but not limited to fabrication of test specimens on job sites, transportation of specimens to the laboratory, testing and/or testing management, and reporting
- Conduct laboratory testing programs related to the development and optimization of cement-based mixtures following directions provided by material engineers and scientists
- Assist with other various laboratory and fieldwork tasks, including providing technician support to other departments of the company if necessary
- Maintain, adjust and calibrate testing equipment, test fixtures, and other laboratory tools
- Facilitate repairs or replacements as needed
- Keep track of laboratory consumables and equipment inventory
- Actively participate in internal safety programs to ensure that all work in the laboratory and the field is performed in accordance with all applicable safety rules and regulations
- Engage with all stakeholders within the company to address waste materials generated at job and test sites, and management practices
- Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, noise, and outdoor conditions
- Physical effort may be required for the handling of supplies or materials (up to 50 lbs unassisted)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education (Associate's degree or higher) or equivalent professional experience
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in cement and concrete testing
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Desire to work in a team setting
- Self-motivation to investigate and implement new ideas, and proactive in overcoming obstacles
- Ability to prioritize and adapt in dynamic work environments
- Able to lift 50 pounds
- Proficient or fluent in English
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Professional Certification with ACI as a Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician
- Proficiency in ASTM test methods related to measurement of mortar and concrete properties in the fresh and hardened state
- Basic computer skills (MS Office, Google Docs)
- High attention to detail
- Interest in innovation and teamwork
- Capacity to learn and rapidly adapt to the fast-paced environment of a construction technology startup
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends when needed; flexibility is a key element of this position
