About the Role
Clear the runway. Let great engineers fly.
This role isn't about writing the code—it's about making it possible for a high-performing team of data engineers to do the best work of their careers. As a Sr. Manager, Technology & Data at Hummingbird, you'll act as a force multiplier: translating complex, ambiguous problems into clear direction, keeping cross-functional and cross-client initiatives moving, and removing the barriers that slow great engineers down. Most of your day is spent on alignment, momentum, and architectural guidance—not tickets.
You'll also lead the charge on AI-powered development—and this one's non-negotiable. You've already used tools like Claude, Cursor, or similar to build something real, whether at work or on your own time. Now you'll bring that firsthand experience to the team, driving adoption of AI coding assistants, automation, and agents as core parts of how the team operates—not a someday initiative, but the way we work now.
You'll serve as the initial face of the data engineering team with clients, translating their needs into scalable solutions without requiring every engineer to manage those relationships independently. And as the team grows (less senior engineers may be on the horizon), you'll help shape what that looks like too.
What You’ll Do
- Lead a small team of senior data engineers—breaking down ambiguous problems, removing blockers, and keeping engineers aligned on standards without micromanaging execution
- Serve as the initial client-facing voice of the team, translating client needs into scalable solutions and supporting conversations around data access, architecture, and governance
- Drive AI-powered development adoption across the team—tools like Claude or similar—to automate workflows, build agents, and improve efficiency while maintaining quality and architectural integrity
- Partner with leadership to evaluate AI tools and platforms, including due diligence, testing, and ROI assessment
- Guide data pipeline and platform architecture with an eye toward long-term scalability, not short-term fixes
- Conduct code and pull request reviews to reinforce standards, quality, and consistency
- Work cross-functionally to unblock data access, standardize data models, and align on a common data language
- Translate strategy into clear execution plans—sequenced, resourced, and aligned to business priorities
- Make and communicate tradeoff decisions on priorities, timelines, and architecture, surfacing risks and implications for leadership
- Coach team members on how work is done, not just what gets delivered
The Details
- Employment Eligibility: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
- Work Location: Remote. You must work from a location within the United States with consistent Internet service
- Work Type: Full-time
- Compensation: Expected range is $141,000 - $184,000. New hires usually start between $141,000 - $170,000, depending on experience and internal equity.
- Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid time off; 401(k); parental leave; career development support; and more
- Travel: 2-3 trips per year for client meetings, training or conferences, or internal strategy sessions
What You’ll Bring
- 6–8+ years of experience delivering production systems or data solutions across domains such as data engineering, software engineering, analytics, infrastructure, or enterprise systems
- 2–4+ years in people leadership or equivalent, with a track record of leading high-performing technical teams
- Strong ability to make prioritization, sequencing, and resourcing decisions in environments with real complexity and ambiguity
- Proven ability to operate as a systems-level thinker—guiding architecture, connecting cross-domain solutions, and ensuring systems integrate and scale effectively
- Experience managing complex dependencies across teams, systems, and technical domains
- Strong communication and alignment skills across both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership
- Hands-on experience using AI-powered development tools—Claude, Cursor, Copilot, or similar—to build or ship something real, whether in a professional or personal context, and the ability to bring that experience to a team
Nice to Have
- Experience leading complex programs or multiple workstreams across technology and data functions
- Background working in regulated, secure, or high-trust environments (healthcare experience a plus)
- Experience in startup or fast-paced environments where you've had to build structure while moving quickly
What Helps You Shine
- Please note that we use both your resume and your written and oral communication throughout the hiring process to understand your fit for this role.
- Thoughtful, clear responses help us see your attention to detail, your professionalism, and your ability to communicate with care — all skills that are essential for success on our team.
Expectations for Focus & Presence
- To support patients and each other, this role requires your full attention during scheduled work hours. Our Outside Employment Policy doesn’t allow overlapping work or “job stacking,” so any outside work must happen fully outside your Hummingbird schedule.
- We value connection, teamwork, and being present, which is what keeps our patients safe and our team supported. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll feel at home here. If you’re hoping to hold another job during the same hours, this job won’t be the best match.
Required & Desired Skills
Please Note: The seniority level of this position may be adjusted during the recruitment process based on candidate skills and experience.
